(edit to add a missing word to highlight how bad wasted space really is. I can happily miss out on all the 'features' they throw in if I use Pidgin and can actually have enough of a conversation on screen. You missed emphasising an important problem - it wastes so much screen space it's not funny. Also, "Peter Bright says (23:44)" is not a very good way to timestamp things in general, unless it were at the beginning of each message, which it isn't. This forces you to read the gray text to see who said what (which is painful on the solid white.) Not to mention the gel bubbles around people's avatars makes everyone look fruity :<. Most other clients alternate colors, while some might only color the name differently. If memory serves me right, iChat uses speech bubbles from opposing sides of the chat window.

There's loads of wasted space, the color scheme has nothing to do with anything else in Windows (maybe Office if you count that, which isn't part of Windows) and there's no proper distinction between what you say and the other person says. Care to elaborate?Īlso, the UI is very horrible indeed. You can comment on updates, and even view YouTube videos that your friends have shared directly in Messenger.Really? Making program using an open protocol => never impressive? Plus, hell a lot more people use WLM than iChat and it makes a bigger of a difference.Īnd just because you think the UI is horrible doesn't make the UI horrible for everyone else. Updates from your friends and fan pages on Facebook, Windows Live, and other networks show up directly in Messenger.

While the interface may look plain at first, it actually incorporates nice text and photo animations, similar to “Metro” interface used in Zune for PC and previews of Windows Phone 7. Currently you can comment on friend’s Facebook posts, and in the upcoming final release you’ll be able to chat with Facebook friends directly. You can update your status on all of your networks at the same time from the top, or just chat with your friends as before. The main screen has been entirely overhauled, and now shows updates from Windows Live, Facebook, and any other networks you may have added. We chose Social Highlights so we could see information from our Facebook friends and more, this is the best way to experience the new features in Messenger. Now, select if you want to see highlights from your social networks, or news updates from MSN. Select what you want to see in Messenger, and the click Connect with Facebook. We added Facebook to our account, and the setup should be similar for other networks. Otherwise, click the social network’s icon to add its settings to Messenger.
If you’ve already added social networks to your online Live account, you won’t need to configure anything else. Currently these are the only supported networks, but others may be added before it is finally released. You can now add social services to Windows Live Messenger, including Facebook and Myspace.
Sign in with your standard Messenger account, and select Sign me in automatically if you want Messenger to automatically use this account each time you launch Messenger. You’ll notice that the sign in screen has slightly changed, with a new setup progress indicator at the bottom of the window. Once setup is finished, launch Messenger from the Start menu.
